The charming capital of Samos, Vathi, is located in the northeastern part of the island. The settlement is built amphitheater at the bottom of the gulf from which – as the local tradition – it took its name.
The Vathi early last century was a small settlement near the port, which was founded by traders, who originally built in the offices and warehouses. Slowly – slowly a modern city began to grow around the harbor. In 1832 Vathi became the island’s capital. Today, it shows great tourist development and is one of the most popular holiday destinations in the Aegean.




Ancient Samos (Pythagorion) was considered one of the greatest cities of antiquity. Both in this and in the realm of Heraion, the oldest archaeological finds dating to the fourth millennium BC The heyday of Samos is dated in the mid 6th century. B.C.

The island was a great naval power and had commercial relations with neighboring Asia Minor and the Mediterranean countries. The Samians established colonies on the coast of Ionia, Thrace and the West.
